Ex-president deems proponents of pausing artificial intelligence harmful

A growing rift has emerged between Washington’s aggressive push to export artificial intelligence and the tech industry’s sudden urge to pull back. In May, federal officials deployed over $100bn in unused Export-Import Bank lending power to market domestic systems overseas, positioning American firms at the forefront of global competition. Yet the very leaders behind these advanced technologies—including Anthropic’s Dario Amodei, OpenAI’s Sam Altman, and xAI’s Elon Musk—are now advocating for an intentional deceleration. Amodei initiated the push two days prior to the weekend, urging competitors to grant outside auditors internal visibility while seeking a federal antitrust exemption to collaborate on protection protocols, an effort quickly endorsed by Altman and Musk according to the AP.
