Contenders vying to become the British capital’s second Conservative city chief

Four declared contenders are competing for the Conservative nomination ahead of the May 2028 London mayoral race, following the recent closure of submissions. Grassroots Tory members throughout the capital will soon select their preferred figurehead from a pruned list of two finalists. An official reveal of this pair is slated for November 20, after organizers wisely avoided launching on Friday the 13th. The upcoming contest comes as Conservatives attempt to reshape their approach to governing Britain’s metropolis.

Among those seeking the post is Braintree MP James Cleverly, a former Foreign and Home Secretary who previously served on the London Assembly and presided over budget reductions as chief of the capital’s fire service. Regarded by many within party ranks as the leading figure despite his Brexit
