A recent presidential directive issued on September 29 mandates that United States government agencies abandon the term “artificial intelligence” in favor of superintelligence, abbreviated as SI, across public documentation. Under this decree, President Donald Trump assigned his chief science and technology counselor a 60-day period to establish a formal statutory definition for superintelligence, though existing legal frameworks for AI currently remain active per the IAPP. That same day, six prominent tech figures—including Elon Musk—gathered to endorse the White House Accord on Super Intelligence, an agreement encouraging advanced model creators to implement independent auditing alongside internal safeguards. Following this gathering, the administration also revealed leadership appointments for a freshly formed Super Intelligence Force.
In alignment with these policy shifts, Elon Musk announced on Sunday that SpaceX’s specialized technology branch will adopt the brand SpaceXSI. The billionaire entrepreneur confirmed this pivot in an online interaction on X when an observer queried if SpaceXAI would undergo a moniker update. Responding directly to the inquiry, Musk wrote, “Yes, we will make that change,” after asserting earlier that morning that traditional AI had become obsolete and framing SpaceX as a superintelligence enterprise. He further remarked that the SI label offered a superior alternative for the company’s future direction.
Should this rebranding proceed, it will mark the division’s third distinct identity within the current calendar year. The aerospace giant originally absorbed xAI in February before rebranding the venture to SpaceXAI and debuting fresh iconography on July 6. However, no specific timetable has been provided for the transition, and the unit’s official X profile currently retains its previous handle. Additionally, representatives for the group did not instantly reply to press inquiries seeking clarification on when the updated nomenclature will officially take effect.
