England will play Pakistan and Sri Lanka twice each in the tri-series later in October; Adil Rashid and Sam Curran fit to return following injury as Jofra Archer rested; uncapped trio Mason Crane, James Coles and Henry Crocombe included in 16-player squad Adil Rashid and Sam Curran have been recalled to England’s ODI squad after recovering from injury, but Jofra Archer will be rested for the tri-series against Pakistan and Sri Lanka. Three uncapped players are included in the 16-player squad for the series in Pakistan, which will see Harry Brook’s side play each opponent twice. Spinner Mason Crane is included eight years on from making his last international appearance, which came in the final Test of England’s 2017/18 Ashes tour. Sussex duo James Coles and Henry Crocombe could also make their ODI debuts having been included after being part of England’s white-ball squads earlier this summer.
Rashid featured as England beat Sri Lanka in a home T20 series in September but the spinner then missed the ODI matches that followed because of a hand injury. Archer came through a summer playing across formats for England and in The Hundred, but with tours of Australia and South Africa to come during a busy winter, national selector Marcus North has decided to rest the fast bowler. England are also without Jos Buttler after the former skipper was ruled out of the tour with a hamstring injury suffered against Sri Lanka last month.
North said: “The tri-series in Pakistan provides another valuable opportunity for our ODI squad to test themselves against quality opposition in different conditions. Please use Chrome browser for a more accessible video player “Adil Rashid and Sam Curran return to the squad following their respective injuries while Jofra Archer has been rested to manage his workload following a busy summer. “Mason Crane has been performing consistently for Glamorgan across both formats during the summer. He’s an experienced, high-class leg-spinner who thoroughly deserves another opportunity at international level.” Having been relieved of his Test duties earlier in the summer, Brendon McCullum oversees a rotated coaching staff that does not feature Kevin Pietersen.
The former England star was appointed last month as a specialist mentor for the white-ball sides and began his role during the two series against Sri Lanka. McCullum will be supported by Jeetan Patel, Mike Yardy, David Saker and Carl Hopkinson. There is expected to be continued rotation of McCullum’s staff as England continue a congested schedule building up to the 50-over Cricket World Cup next year.
