While humanity long believed tool creation was unique to our species, historical findings proved otherwise. In 1871, Charles Darwin documented apes utilizing rocks to shatter nuts. Decades later in 1960, the late primatologist Jane Goodall witnessed a wild chimp named David Greybeard alter a twig, stripping away leaves to pull insects from a nest into his mouth. Upon learning of this groundbreaking discovery, Goodall’s mentor, Louis Leakey, famously observed, “Now we must redefine ‘tool,’ redefine ‘man,’ or accept chimpanzees as humans.” Since that time, field researchers have recorded these primates fashioning leaf sponges for drinking liquids, shaping sticks to collect algae, and honing sharp wooden pikes for hunting.
A fresh study published in the journal Frontiers in Psychology reveals how such complex abilities move from older generations to offspring. Adult primates intentionally demonstrate foraging techniques before giving their equipment to juveniles so the younger animals can mirror the movements. Through this social interaction, offspring acquire the skills needed to handle basic implements when seeking sustenance. Female parents appear to be the primary guides and role models in this developmental process.
Experts emphasize that this active sharing of implements functions as an instructional method alongside direct observation and supervised trial. “Receiving food and tools from experienced individuals, which we call food or tool transfer, may help chimpanzees learn to use technology to extract foods that are difficult to access,” noted co-author Andreu Sánchez-Megías, a graduate student affiliated with the University of Barcelona and the Jane Goodall Institute Spain in Senegal. He further explained that “Tool transfers thus appear to be a form of teaching, together with observation and supervised practice. It appears that mothers are the main models and teachers for young chimpanzees in this manner.”
