Volvo’s PHEV XC60 plus XC90 crossovers deliver impressive driving range

Manufacturing for the refreshed XC60 and XC90 is scheduled to commence in late Fall 2026, with buyers expected to receive their vehicles in early 2027. The Swedish vehicle manufacturer anticipates that surging consumer interest in dual-fuel powertrains will generate crucial capital to finance its upcoming fully electric lineup, including the EX50, EX60, and an economical successor to the EX30. These newly unveiled iterations represent the brand’s premiere “long range plug-in hybrids” aimed at redefining customer expectations in a booming market.

Standard plug-in models typically achieve merely 30 to 50 miles operating solely on electrical power, but Volvo’s latest offerings significantly surpass those baseline figures. Preliminary EPA evaluations indicate that the updated XC60 will achieve an impressive 78 miles of battery propulsion, whereas the larger XC90 yields 73 miles. This massive performance leap, which exceeds twice the distance of older variants, stems from an underfloor 41.2 kWh battery pack with 37.9 kWh usable capacity that delivers stronger current to upgraded electric motors. Should official certification confirm these estimates, the duo will boast “the longest electric range of any plug-in hybrids available in the American market”.

To complement its engineering upgrades, the XC60 showcases fresh aesthetic touches aligned with the company’s modern design philosophy. Notable exterior modifications include a restyled front grille, recontoured front and rear bumpers, a revised hood, altered front wings, a new tailgate, unique wheel patterns, and an updated “Thor’s Hammer” LED light signature. Safety functionality is similarly expanded through driver-assistance systems borrowed from the revamped XC40, incorporating Automatic Emergency Steering and Braking alongside collision prevention mechanisms and a cyclist detection system for opening doors.

Inside the cabin, the infotainment setup now integrates Google’s artificial intelligence Gemini chatbot, expanding on the carmaker’s pioneering adoption of native Google software. This technological suite arrives alongside the realization that many hybrid drivers rarely connect their vehicles to chargers, relying instead on conventional gas tanks. Nevertheless, prospective buyers remain strongly drawn to higher potential mileage stats even if they seldom utilize the total capacity.
