Across the European continent, car manufacturers are aggressively slashing costs, as evidenced by Volkswagen’s recent decision to close four German assembly plants, eliminate 50,000 jobs, and halve its vehicle lineup. Industry analyst Justin Cox of GlobalData noted that these severe pressures are widespread across the automotive sector, forcing executives to execute previously expected headcount reductions. Within Great Britain, where approximately 34,000 of Jaguar Land Rover’s employees reside, the government has explicitly rejected providing any tailored corporate bailout. Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds and representatives for Prime Minister Andy Burnham confirmed this firm policy stance, offering instead broader industrial measures like reduced electricity rates for factories, a £2 billion Electric Car Grant, and £4 billion in zero-emission research and capital support.
