Condemning the authorization as “climate vandalism”, Green party leader Zack Polanski stated, “Today’s decision by Labour is a betrayal of all of our futures, Labour has abandoned all credibility in the fight against climate change.” Polanski further remarked, “The energy secretary has herself said it will make no difference to energy bills, the health secretary has admitted the summer heatwave added to pressure on the NHS and the industry’s own assessment is that will create only 27 jobs. This is a victory for Shell over the people.” A survey conducted by Savanta for E3G revealed that approximately a third of voters—and nearly half of citizens aged 18 to 24—are less inclined to support Labour due to continued North Sea extraction, creating deep unease among government lawmakers representing areas with rising Green contestation.

Anti-fossil fuel organization Uplift warned that the development provides minimal national energy benefits despite heavy corporate promotion. Expressing deep skepticism, Uplift’s executive director Tessa Khan noted, “Jackdaw will provide around just 2% of our gas demand for roughly 10 years. It has been oversold and won’t stop the overall decline in North Sea jobs, as it will be largely unmanned and operated remotely.” She cautioned that “Labour’s climate credibility is on the line. No new oil and gasfields are compatible with safe climate limits.” Echoing these concerns, E3G’s UK energy programme lead Ellie Mae O’Hagan asserted, “After a summer of deadly heatwaves, the public has made up its mind: more drilling is the wrong answer.” O’Hagan added, “If the prime minister wants a decade in power to change the country, he should invest in heat pumps and solar, not tax breaks for the oil and gas companies driving up our bills and polluting the planet.”

The official endorsement allows fuel to flow to homes and commercial entities starting before the current month concludes. Announcing the move, Miatta Fahnbulleh, the energy secretary, declared: “Following careful consideration of all relevant factors I have agreed that the regulator can grant consent for gas to be produced at Jackdaw, which will begin to supply the UK with gas from this winter thanks to the highly skilled and vital North Sea workers.” Fahnbulleh maintained that “This decision will support the country’s energy security with homegrown gas this winter and help minimise the UK’s use of imported higher emission fuels as we continue our transition to renewables and nuclear.” She reassured the public that “The decision is compatible with our legally binding climate commitments, and we remain resolute in ending new licences for oil and gas and achieving net zero by 2050.”

Though Labour’s 2024 campaign manifesto pledged to block fresh drilling concessions, developers sought environmental clearance for pre-existing rights. Approval for the location, alongside the separate Rosebank project, was previously invalidated after judicial rulings mandated full accounting for end-use combustion emissions. Corporate applicants resubmitted their environmental documentation earlier in the year, but the ruling on Jackdaw was deferred until after the 8 October byelection in Holborn and St Pancras, where Labour successfully retained its seat against Green challengers.

Operated by Shell, Jackdaw joins the Equinor-managed Rosebank site in driving fierce debate, even drawing comments from Donald Trump, who urged Andy Burnham to authorize both ventures. Energy sector advocates claim these offshore sites could supply 10% of domestic generation at peak performance, whereas activists insist ecological degradation will erase any monetary gains. Intensive lobbying preceded the announcement, including a study from Shell and Equinor’s joint venture Adura asserting that rejection would cost the national economy almost £10.8bn over a ten-year span. Consequently, the government’s green light stands to strengthen Labour’s political standing across north-east Scotland, where trade unions and maritime workers strongly favored permit approval.

Strong criticism has erupted from environmentalists and political opponents following the British administration’s choice to permit gas extraction off the coast.
