The AI Act category that covers systems monitoring workers’ performance was delayed to December 2027. A London startup is putting cameras into the operating theatres of a Polish public teaching hospital. It logs surgical stages and flags delays, and the European rules that would classify it do not bite for a year.

VitVio is deploying its Vetro platform at University Clinical Centre in Gdańsk, the first Polish hospital to take it, starting in selected rooms, Unite.AI reported. The Polish distributor Medim is coordinating the installation. Vetro pairs multiple cameras with ambient sensing. It turns continuous capture into a live geometric model of the room, letting its agents recognise stages and coordinate between cases.

The hospital is affiliated with the Medical University of Gdańsk and lists 1,241 beds and 4,834 employees. Instrument tracking and operative notes are still to come. The company is not Polish. VitVio is London-based and raised €1.8M in pre-seed funding in January 2025, led by LDV Capital, then $8M in seed last October.

Its first pilot was British, at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. Its chief operating officer cites the founding team’s Polish roots. Denmark has run the same architecture for over a year. Teton’s system turns room video into 3D representations and deletes the footage, claiming a 25% cut in night-shift workload.

The pitch is the same because the shortage is. The EU is short about 1.2 million doctors, nurses and midwives. The rules that would classify these systems are not in force. Annex III of the AI Act makes AI intended to monitor and evaluate workers’ behaviour high-risk, and the Omnibus pushed employment and six other categories to December 2027.

VitVio’s earlier description sits closer to that wording. Its January 2025 launch copy had the platform tracking adherence to safety protocols, alerting when a procedure deviates, and producing post-surgery debrief reports. Gdańsk is described differently. The announcement covers logging stages, flagging delays and preparing teams, and the company says Vetro strips identifiable data in real time and builds no biometric templates.

The data arrangements are not public. VitVio’s privacy policy makes the hospital the controller and the company its processor, and no retention, hosting or access terms are disclosed. Staff consent is barely available either, since employment consent is rarely free under GDPR. British hospitals have gone further with less argument.

Surgeons in London used AI on a live endoscope feed to remove an 11mm pituitary tumour in May, inside a clinical trial.
